As home to the Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, there is no shortage of sites and activities in Arizona. Tourism in this beautiful state helps visitors from across the country and around the world in exploring the natural landscapes and the quickly growing cities that make it so unique. Arizona tourism can be divided into five regions, each with their own distinct feel and each with their own appeal.
Northern Arizona is home to that most famous of all Arizona tourism draws, the Grand Canyon. While it is not the deepest canyon in the world, the Grand Canyon’s international status comes from the unparalleled views that it offers and the vast expanse of land that it covers. The varicolored sedimentary rocks exposed on the canyon walls have awed generation after generation of visitors and it is no surprise that the Grand Canyon was one of the first national parks ever created. However, the Grand Canyon is not the only Northern Arizona tourism draw. The red rocks of Sedona, the forested mountains of Flagstaff and the blue waters of Lake Powell create a feast for the eyes in this dramatic region. Cultural explorations along historic Route 66 will also introduce visitors to Native American cultures, as well as regional artwork and cuisine.
The landscape alters for travelers heading to North Central Arizona. Tourism here takes advantage of the cooler weather and the Ponderosa Pine forests. Although many consider Arizona a desert state, it is hard to imagine high up in the Snowy Mountains in winter months. As a site where Native American and Old West cultures existed, there is no shortage of historical experiences in this region of Arizona tourism.
Phoenix and Central Arizona are located in the middle of the Arizona desert. Combined with the surrounding cities of Chandler, Glendale, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Scottsdale and Tempe, this region is known as the Valley of the Sun. The rapidly growing cities offer dining from casual to fine, shopping, entertainment and a broad range of cultural highlights that focus on the historical and geographical aspects of the area.
The city of Tuscan is located in Southern Arizona. Tourism in this region is diverse, ranging from the bustling metropolis of the city to the natural beauty and Old West Charms that the area is best known for. A number of Old West towns allow visitors to explore times past, while the rocky mountain ranges offer countless adventures to those so inclined.
The desert landscape finds a break in the cool blue waters of the Colorado River in Arizona’s West Coast. The river dominates Arizona tourism along the West Coast with communities and natural wonders tracing it all the way through the state. Wildlife lovers will be impressed with the many protected habitats along the river’s edge and the abundance of flora and fauna. There are also a number of opportunities to explore Native American cultures, in addition to activities like golfing and fine dining.
