A Global Cityscape

The largest city in Canada and the fifth largest in North America is the global city of Toronto. Tourism here centers on a diverse and friendly population, a beautiful city and world-class entertainment, food and activities. The stunning skyline includes gold-tinned skyscrapers as well as original architecture from the city’s first settlers. With over 1,000 festivals being held at different points throughout the year, there is always something going on in Toronto tourism.

The many distinct neighborhoods of Toronto each offer unique experiences in food, shopping and entertainment. The neighborhoods range from the densely populated original Downtown area, to the Financial Districts on Bay Street, to the historical wealth of neighborhoods in Old Toronto, to ethnically identified areas like Greektown and two Chinatowns. There are literally hundreds of neighborhoods to explore, allowing everyone to experience Toronto tourism in their own unique way.

Throughout the year and especially during the Toronto Film Festival, the neighborhood of Yorkville is one of the biggest draws in Toronto tourism. Fine dining and shopping are key elements to this neighborhood that attracts an international metropolitan crowd.

Another neighborhood popular with tourists is Greektown, which has the most concentrated number of restaurants per kilometer of any place in the world. The Taste of Danforth food festival is located here and draws over a million people in the two and a half days it is held each year.

One of the Seven Wonders of the World is found in Toronto. Tourism inevitably draws sightseers to the CN Tower, the tallest free-standing structure in the world. The structure contains several observation levels with shops and restaurants and provides an amazing view of the city below.

As with most global cities, there is no lack of museums in Toronto. Tourism highlights include: the Royal Ontario Museum, a major museum for world culture and natural history; the Toronto Zoo; and the Art Gallery of Ontario. The Ontario Science Centre is especially appealing to families because the many child-friendly interactive exhibits.

The largest city in Canada is home to a number of major league sports including National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, National Lacrosse League, National Basketball Association, Canadian Football League and Major League Soccer. Sports tourism brings many people to the city and gives them the opportunity to explore all that Toronto tourism has to offer.

Getting around in Toronto poses little difficulty for visitors. An extensive network of public transportation is in operation and can be easily understood. Additionally, while the highways around Toronto are some of the busiest in the world, it is not known for being a challenge to visiting drivers.

Beyond the delights of this vast and multicultural city, Toronto tourism can provide a base for exploring the vast lands of Canada. It is possible to organize many trips and excursions while based in the city. Nature and wildlife reserves, wineries and white water rafting are all activities easily planned from the city in one-day trips, while more exotic adventures can be found in multi-day excursions.
